What happened
On November 5, 2009, Nidal Hasan, then a U.S. Army major and psychiatrist, opened fire inside the Soldier Readiness Processing Center at Fort Hood. He killed 13 people and wounded more than 30.
A military jury convicted him and sentenced him to death in August 2013. His appeals ran out in 2025. Military death sentences need the President's approval, which came on October 2, 2026. Five days later the Army set the date.
It will be the first execution carried out by the U.S. military since 1961, and its first by firing squad since the Second World War.
